Canberra, September 21 (Xinhua) – Australia has officially recognized the independent and sovereign State of Palestine, a decision that took effect Sunday, the Australian government announced in a statement.
"Australia recognises the legitimate and long-standing aspirations of the Palestinian people for a state of their own," Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a joint press statement.
As noted in the statement, Australia's recognition of Palestine, along with Canada and the United Kingdom, is part of a coordinated international effort to give new impetus to the "two-state solution" for two peoples, the implementation of which should begin with a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of the hostages taken in October 2023.
