GUANGZHOU, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) — Authorities in Jiangmen City, south China's Guangdong Province, reported 1,714 cases of chikungunya fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease, as of Sept. 19, triggering a public health emergency response.

At a press conference on Saturday, officials said all cases reported so far were mild, with no severe or fatal outcomes.

On September 19, the city government decided to implement a Level 3 public health emergency response in response to the ongoing chikungunya fever situation in Jiangmen.

Chikungunya fever is an acute infectious disease caused by the chikungunya virus, the main clinical symptoms of which are fever, rash and joint pain.

This virus is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. –0–
