URUMQI, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) — Construction of a new expressway through the Tianshan Mountains began Saturday in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The highway is designed to reduce travel time between the region's north and south and strengthen tourism and trade ties.
The 393.7-kilometer Duqu Expressway will connect Dushanzi County in northern Xinjiang with Kuqa County in the south. Designed to achieve speeds of 100-120 km/h, the highway is scheduled for completion in 2032, reducing travel time to approximately five hours.
Renowned for its scenic beauty, the current Duku (Dushanzi-Kucha) highway is only open four months a year due to snowfall and icy conditions. The new highway will allow year-round travel and connect popular tourist attractions, including the Narat Landscape Park.
In recent decades, China has made significant progress in connecting northern and southern Xinjiang with highways such as the Urumqi-Korla and Dushanzi-Kuqa highways. These projects have made travel within the region significantly more convenient.
