Caracas, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) — Venezuela on Friday called on the UN Security Council to promote an immediate end to US military operations in the Caribbean.

Iván Gil, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Bolivarian Republic, shared a video of a corresponding speech by Venezuela's Permanent Representative to the UN, Alexandre Yáñez, on his Telegram channel. He added that the appeal was made on behalf of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

In his speech to the UN Security Council, A. Yáñez stated that his country is the target of “systematic persecution” by Washington, including smear campaigns, unilateral sanctions, and rejection of Venezuelan institutions.

He warned that the situation had entered a "more dangerous" phase with the deployment of US naval, air and land forces in the Caribbean, including a nuclear submarine, which he said violated the UN Charter.

A. Yañez also pointed to US reports of “extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean.”

The Permanent Representative called on the UN to condemn US actions, which, according to him, threaten stability both in the South American country itself and in the region as a whole. –0–
