Addis Ababa, September 19 (Xinhua) — The number of registered cases of monkeypox (the new name for monkeypox) in Africa since the beginning of 2024 has exceeded 190,000, with the death toll approaching 2,000, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) reported on Thursday.

Speaking at an online briefing for reporters, Africa CDC Deputy Director of Outbreak Response Yap Boom II said that since January 2024, 191,559 cases have been reported in 29 affected African countries, including 53,013 confirmed cases and 1,999 deaths.

He noted that efforts to contain the spread of the disease are yielding results: in recent weeks, the number of confirmed and probable cases has steadily declined from the peak recorded in May. According to the Africa CDC, the weekly number of confirmed cases has decreased by 70 percent—from 1,620 in May to 491 last week—along with improved testing coverage.
