UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) — The UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, announced on Thursday his decision to resign due to personal reasons.

“I informed the UN Secretary-General of my intention to resign after more than six and a half years as the UN Special Envoy for Syria, and he graciously accepted my request,” Pedersen told the UN Security Council.

“I had been planning to leave for a long time for personal reasons after a long period of service,” he said.

The 69-year-old envoy noted that he will leave his post in the near future but will continue to serve until his final day in office. The exact date of his departure has not been announced.
