BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) — China has built the world's largest carbon emissions trading market during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), which is now operating stably, Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu said Friday.
Speaking at a press conference, Huang Runqiu said the national carbon trading market accounts for more than 60 percent of the country's carbon emissions.
China officially launched the market in July 2021. Since then, the platform has grown into the world's largest carbon market by volume of traded greenhouse gas emissions.
Carbon trading, which allows the buying and selling of permits to emit carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases, is considered one of the most important tools to help reduce carbon footprints and meet emissions targets.
