Hefei, September 19 (Xinhua) — European innovation is often praised for its meticulousness and precision, while China's strength lies in its astonishing speed and execution. Only by combining these two approaches can innovation be effective and scalable,” Stefano Petrilli, head of global operations at Marelli Propulsion, noted in a recent interview with Xinhua News Agency.
Recently, as part of a business trip, he visited Hefei (the administrative center of Anhui Province, East China), one of the largest auto manufacturing centers in the country, where he visited Marelli Powertrain /Hefei/ Co., Ltd.
An important component of Marelli's operations in China, the plant is currently installing new assembly lines to increase capacity and is preparing to launch a new innovative product.
"New lines mean new challenges. The team worked day and night to meet them at 'Chinese speed,'" said S. Petrilli. "I hope the experience gained here can be generalized and transferred to other regions."
Since its founding in Hefei in 2017, Marelli Powertrain /Hefei/ has grown steadily. The company now has 11 production lines, and the annual output of some products exceeds 1 million units.
"We've achieved business growth and consistently improved profitability for two consecutive years. In recent years, we've been steadily expanding production and developing new products. While serving leading domestic automakers, we're also actively expanding into overseas markets," said Marelli China Director Wang Hong, adding that the plant is expected to continue growing in the coming years.
Since entering the Chinese market in 1999, Marelli has built a solid business foundation in various fields, including automotive lighting, electronics, powertrain and clean technology.
To date, the company has built eight research centers and 17 factories across China. Over the years, it has established partnerships with leading automakers both domestically and internationally.
"China is not only the largest automotive market in the world, but also one of the most strategically important and dynamically growing markets for Marelli," emphasized S. Petrilli. "This allows us to provide local customers with personalized and rapid market entry solutions, while leveraging the advantages of China's innovation and manufacturing to support global projects."
In his view, China's transformation from the "world's factory" to a "global innovation hub" has created unprecedented opportunities for foreign-invested enterprises like Marelli.
“Working in one of the most dynamic and rapidly changing mobility ecosystems in the world, we are seeing shorter product cycles, higher customer expectations and constant waves of innovation,” he said.
Petrilli also noted that China's advanced supply chains allow Marelli to efficiently and flexibly localize production of key components, while the company continues to attract a growing local pool of skilled talent—from engineers to software developers and cross-functional experts—who not only enable rapid technological iteration but also foster a customer-focused approach.
According to statistics, China has ranked first in the world in the production and sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) for 10 consecutive years. In 2024, NEV production in the country will exceed 13 million units.
Amid the rapid growth of the NEV sector, Marelli is increasing its investments and accelerating its transformation. The company has launched several cutting-edge technologies for electric vehicles, including a wireless battery management system.
In the field of intelligent interior solutions, Marelli began developing virtualized interior domain controllers in 2017 and began mass production in China in 2020.
This year, its intelligent cabin solution, which integrates infotainment and telematics systems, will enter mass production and be supplied to both domestic and international automakers. In the display space, the company has introduced numerous innovative products, including dynamic privacy screens.
"Many technologies were developed by Marelli's local team in China. This localized R&D and manufacturing capability not only meets our customers' high standards for technology, quality, and efficiency, but also demonstrates our long-term commitment to the Chinese market," said Shen Ke-lei, Marelli Executive Vice President and President of Marelli China.
