UN, Sept. 17 (Xinhua/ — The UN Security Council on Wednesday adopted a resolution on the return of Kuwaiti and third-country nationals missing as a result of Iraq's 1990 invasion of the country.

Resolution 2792 was unanimously adopted by all 15 members of the UN Security Council. It requests the UN Secretary-General to appoint a high-level representative to support and facilitate continued cooperation between Iraq and Kuwait on this issue, as well as to resolve the issue of missing Kuwaiti property.

According to the document, the head of the UN must inform the Security Council of any progress by March 31, 2026, and every six months thereafter.

The resolution states that the UN Security Council will consider the continuing need for UN oversight of missing persons and property no later than 31 December 2030.

Facilitating the repatriation of missing Kuwaitis and third-country nationals, as well as Kuwaiti property, is currently the responsibility of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), whose mandate expires on 31 December 2025. The new resolution allows this assistance to continue. –0–
