BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) — A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck 143 kilometers east of the Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at 18:58 GMT on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to preliminary data, the epicenter of the tremors was located at 52.95 degrees north latitude and 160.75 degrees east longitude. The hypocenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers.
