Beijing, September 18 (Xinhua) — China's rail passenger traffic hit a record high in the first eight months of this year, China Railways (CR) reported Thursday.
From January to August, rail passenger traffic nationwide increased by 6.7 percent year-on-year to 3.2 billion passenger trips. The average daily number of train departures during this period reached 11,127, an increase of 7.7 percent year-on-year.
Furthermore, this period saw significant growth in cross-border rail traffic. The Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Xianggang high-speed railway carried 21.15 million passengers, while the China–Laos railway carried 174,000 passengers.
To meet the growing market demand for sightseeing trips, health tours and educational trips, railway authorities have developed special railway routes for tourists.
In the first eight months of this year, a total of 1,551 specialized tourist trains were operated in the country, which is 26.1 percent more than in the same period last year. -0-
