QUITO, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) — Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared a 60-day state of emergency in seven provinces on Tuesday, citing "serious internal unrest" after transport unions went on strike over rising diesel prices.

Earlier on Friday, Noboa moved to end diesel subsidies, triggering Monday's strike. He said the state of emergency was in response to police and emergency services reporting "serious internal unrest" as protests and road closures "gain momentum and are disrupting public order."

According to the decree, the introduction of a state of emergency “does not imply any restrictions on the right to demonstrate, provided that they are peaceful and do not affect the rights, freedoms and guarantees of other citizens.”

The decree also authorizes the armed forces and the national police to take the necessary measures to maintain order, prevent violence and protect citizens, as well as to ensure freedom of movement and economic activity. –0–
