The Lhasa-Linzhi Railway, opened in 2021, has a total length of over 403 kilometers. It put an end to the lack of rail service in southeastern Xizang and created a “three-hour economic circle” between Lhasa, Shannan and Linzhi. In the first month after the opening of this “sky road”, 106,000 passengers were transported, an average of 3,500 people per day. Today, the Lhasa-Linzhi Railway has become a golden route for tourists to explore Xizang.
According to an official from China Qinghai-Xizang Railway Corporation, "The Lhasa-Linzhi Railway and Lhasa-Shigatse Railway have formed a 'fast travel and leisurely tourism' system in 7 hours, which allows tourists not only to save travel time but also to fully enjoy the scenery along the way."
A more extensive three-dimensional transportation network is also unfolding on the snowy plateau. At the check-in counter of Milin Airport in Lizhi, Ms. Sun, a tourist from Hangzhou, is filling out documents for a return flight. “Ten years ago, it took my friends three days to get to Lhasa with transfers. Now we take a direct flight to Lizhi, and in three days we can see Peach Blossom Valley, Lulan Town, and even drive to Lhasa.”
Yang Lu, deputy director of the planning department of the Civil Aviation Administration of China's Xizang Autonomous Region, said: "After the opening of the Linzhi airport, the number of tourists and the total tourism income in the region increased by 34 times and 103.8 times, respectively."
In recent years, Xizang has also seen a significant increase in the popularity of road trips, especially self-drive trips.
By the end of 2024, the total length of highways in Xizang reached 124,900 kilometers, the length of railways was 1,359 kilometers, and the number of international and domestic airlines reached 183, connecting five continents. Xizang is gradually becoming an important tourist destination of global significance.
