Beijing, September 17 (Xinhua) — The first China-Russia symposium on sorghum cooperation was held in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, northeast China. The event focused on such topical issues as modern molecular breeding, innovation in germplasm resources, and industry cooperation between the two countries.
According to information on the website of the Heilongjiang Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the symposium was organized by the Institute of Plant Resources of the Heilongjiang Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences jointly with the Russian Research and Design Institute of Sorghum and Corn, and the Heilongjiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Genetic Improvement of Legumes.
Jia Guanqing, chief scientist of the China National Millet and Sorghum Industrial Technology System, emphasized in his speech that this event is a concrete implementation of the consensus on agricultural cooperation reached by the two countries' leaders and will provide technological support for the protection and utilization of black soils. China's breakthrough in stress-resistant sorghum breeding and Russian large-scale cultivation technologies complement each other perfectly. Joint research and development will not only combine the drought- and frost-resistant characteristics of Chinese varieties with Russian precision farming techniques but also create a standardized production system to jointly address the production challenges posed by climate change.
During thematic presentations, sorghum research experts from the two countries delivered presentations on the development of the sorghum industry in China and Russia, modern molecular sorghum breeding research, scientific, technological, and trade cooperation between the countries, and the potential for grain sorghum applications. Participants actively discussed these topics.
Symposium participants also visited the experimental sorghum breeding base at the National Modern Agriculture Demonstration Zone of the Heilongjiang Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, where the Chinese team presented in detail the outstanding achievements of the sorghum breeding team in developing varieties for brewing, broom making, food, and forage production in recent years. Chinese and Russian researchers conducted an in-depth exchange of technologies and field experience.
Russian experts expressed their willingness to share stress-resistant breeding technologies with China and to jointly develop the resources of solonetz-salt-marsh lands in the Far East.
The event promoted cooperation between sorghum-related research institutions and enterprises, laid a solid foundation for the joint breeding of new sorghum varieties, the utilization of sorghum-specific genetic resources, basic theoretical research, the development of cooperation in the sorghum industry and trade, and further strengthened the international influence of the Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences in relevant fields. -0-
