Gaza/Jerusalem, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) — The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out intensive bombardment of Gaza City early Tuesday morning, multiple media outlets reported.
The American publication Axios, citing Israeli officials, reported that the Israeli army launched a ground offensive on Gaza City on Monday to establish control over it. The Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post confirmed that the IDF incursion began late Monday evening.
The IDF has gradually increased its airstrikes on the city and its surrounding areas in recent days, but has not sent ground troops into the densely populated northern city, the Times of Israel reported.
Local sources and eyewitnesses in Gaza have denied reports of Israeli tanks invading. According to locals, there have been no signs of Israeli tanks entering or moving deeper into the city. However, they have confirmed intense airstrikes and drone bombing in most areas of the city.
