Autumn scientific programs for schoolchildren open in the capital

This autumn, almost two thousand Moscow schoolchildren will take part in scientific programs of the project "In the Center of Science". The events will be held at the sites of schools and leading universities. This was reported by Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development.

"The Moscow education system is constantly trying new formats for involving students in science. For example, in the fall we are launching a large-scale scientific marathon in the capital, in which almost two thousand schoolchildren will take part. The children will be able to take their first steps in science, work on modern equipment in the laboratories of leading universities, create their own projects under the guidance of young scientists and participate in festivals," said Anastasia Rakova.

Thus, science festivals are planned. The first of them will take place on September 18 at school No. 1795. For students from the seventh to the 11th grades, practicing scientists from leading universities and laboratories will conduct classes. In addition, participants in the project programs will be able to conduct research under the guidance of young scientists within the framework of scientific and experimental courses. Classes will be held in university laboratories in eight areas, including physics, chemistry, biology, ecology, biotechnology, geoinformation systems, cognitive science and linguistics. The outcome will be a conference, “Frontiers of Knowledge: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Science,” which will take place in December. There, participants will present their projects to a panel of experts.

For students who are already conducting their own research, a mentoring program is provided. The guys will be able to choose one of nine subject areas – from nanomaterials to cognitive research. Schoolchildren will receive support from a curator and scientific supervisor at all stages – from developing an idea to submitting an application for defense. The best projects will be presented at all-Russian and Moscow conferences, such as "Big Challenges", "Engineers of the Future" and "Start in Medicine".

And in October, an educational field school will open for students in grades 8-11 interested in the exact sciences. From October 25 to November 1, the children will study mathematical modeling, economics, linguistics and sociology, and will also create their own scientific and practical projects focused on the requirements of industry and business.
