BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) — The successful election of the 8th Legislative Council of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) on Sunday is another important achievement in fully implementing the principle of "Macao ruled by patriots" and advancing high-quality democracy in line with local conditions, a spokesperson for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council said Monday.
This election was the first to be held after the regional government amended the Legislative Council Election Law in 2024. The revised law improved and streamlined the selection criteria and candidate screening mechanisms, further promoting the principle of “Patriots governing Macao.” It also streamlined procedures at all stages of the election to ensure that it is conducted in a fair, impartial, open and honest manner.
The elections were marked by broad public participation, high voter enthusiasm and an unprecedentedly large number of people who took part in the voting, the agency representative noted.
The all-round qualities of the newly elected deputies have been widely recognized by the Macao public. “Each of them has their own strengths, making them a well-structured team, and their overall qualities can be said to be at the highest level in history,” he emphasized.
The office expressed its hope and confidence that the new legislature will firmly adhere to its original aspiration of loving the country and Macao, conscientiously and firmly safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests, uphold the constitutional order and administrative leadership system of the Macao SAR, and fully support the Chief Executive and the SAR Government in governing the region in accordance with the law.
He called on the new legislators to diligently fulfill their duties and promote proper diversification of Macao's economy, accelerate the construction of the Guangdong-Macao Deep Cooperation Area on Hengqin Island, maintain social harmony and stability, improve people's living standards, and promote better integration of Macao into overall national development.
