Rosneft's research geological expedition, organized jointly with the Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M. V. Lomonosov as part of the Arctic Floating University program, has set off from the port of Tiksi. The expedition vessel Mikhail Somov will operate in the Laptev Sea in the area of the New Siberian Islands archipelago.

Specialists from Rosneft's Arctic Research Center will select rock samples to study their mineral composition, structure, origin, and spatial distribution. A detailed analysis of the extracted material will expand the knowledge base on the geological evolution of the region and the potential of the oil and gas source strata of the Eastern Arctic. Field work on the New Siberian Islands will be carried out in compliance with high standards of environmental safety and environmental protection.

The expedition is a continuation of the Company's long-term work to study sedimentary basins in the Russian Arctic. From 2014 to 2019, scientists studied the geological structure of Arctic islands, and in 2020, Rosneft's scientific program for stratigraphic drilling in the northern seas was launched. To date, scientists have more than 2,000 meters of core at their disposal – unique stone material mined in hard-to-reach regions of the Russian Arctic.
