BEIJING, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) — China plans to launch human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination services for women of relevant age and include the vaccine in the national immunization program this year, the National Health Commission said Thursday.
In accordance with the Vaccine Administration Law of the People's Republic of China, the country implements a national immunization program under which vaccines are provided free of charge to residents.
In recent years, more and more regional governments across the country have been implementing free HPV vaccination programs, in which girls, mostly between the ages of 9 and 14, are vaccinated with a domestically produced vaccine.
Calls to add HPV vaccination to China's national immunization program have grown in recent years, driven by the wider availability of inexpensive domestic vaccines and growing concerns about cervical cancer.
HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer and a serious threat to women's health. Health experts believe that vaccination remains the most effective and affordable way to prevent infection and reduce the risk of cervical cancer and related diseases. -0-
