XIAMEN, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) — The trade index between China and other BRICS countries compiled by the General Administration of Customs (GAC) was released for the first time at the 25th China International Investment and Trade Fair (CIFIT) on Tuesday.
The base period for the index was 2009, the indicators of which were taken as 100 points. In the same year, the first BRICS summit was held in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg. According to the GTU, the index rose to 301.51 points in 2024, demonstrating a good trend in trade development.
The China-BRICS Trade Index is composed of four indicators: trade scale, trade structure, trade innovation and trade potential. It is designed to dynamically monitor the level of development of bilateral trade, provide a basis for decision-making by relevant government departments on the formulation and improvement of trade policies, and provide information support to companies engaged in foreign trade activities.
The data show that in 2024, the values of the above indicators reached 283.73, 192.27, 342.81 and 387.21 respectively, indicating that the scale of trade between China and other BRICS member states has grown steadily since 2009. Meanwhile, the trade structure has improved, the innovative energy has increased, and the trade potential has expanded.
Cai Junwei, Deputy Director of the Statistical Analysis Department of the National Bureau of Statistics of the People's Republic of China, said that compiling and publishing the said index on a regular basis can comprehensively and objectively demonstrate China's achievements in developing trade with other BRICS member states and the fruitful results of practical trade and economic cooperation between the countries of this organization, as well as strengthen trade and economic ties between them.
The 25th CIFIT opened on Monday in Xiamen, east China's Fujian Province, with delegations from more than 120 countries and regions attending. First organized in 1997 by China's Ministry of Commerce, CIFIT has become an important platform for promoting investment and advancing global development. -0-
