ISTANBUL, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) — Five migrants were killed, one was missing and another was injured on Sunday when their boat collided with a coast guard vessel off the coast of Turkey's northwestern province of Balikesir, local authorities said.
A statement from the Balikesir Governor's Office said the incident occurred during a coast guard operation as part of the fight against illegal migration.
It is reported that a high-speed fiberglass boat carrying a smuggler and 34 illegal migrants crashed into a coast guard vessel off the coast of the resort town of Ayvalik.
Five migrants who fell overboard died, one remains missing and another is in critical condition.
The Aegean Sea is an important channel for illegal migrants on their way from Turkey to European countries. –0–
