BEIJING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) — The U.S. policy of using visas as a weapon will not intimidate truly sensible people and will not be able to stop the historical trend of development of relations between China and Central American countries, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Monday.
Lin Jian made the announcement at a daily briefing for reporters.
On September 4, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced in a statement visa restrictions on citizens of Central American countries and their immediate family members who allegedly cooperate with the Chinese Communist Party and undermine the rule of law in Central America. This measure, according to M. Rubio, was taken in order to counter the “corrupting influence” of the PRC in Central America.
Lin Jian responded by emphasizing that the United States dictates to Central American countries how to conduct exchanges with China, and that the American accusations are full of malicious intent and completely groundless. As the Chinese diplomat noted, the United States demonstrates a lack of basic respect for these countries.
Such actions, Lin Jian continued, once again reflect the US hegemonic approach to international exchanges, in which the strong suppress the weak and large countries bully small ones. It also reveals deep-rooted ideological biases and Cold War thinking among some politicians.
China expresses serious dissatisfaction and resolute protest over the groundless attacks and slander by the United States, its blatant coercive diplomacy, and attempts to interfere with and undermine relations between China and Central American countries, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
The US policy of using visas as a weapon will not intimidate truly sensible people and will not be able to stop the historical trend of development of relations between China and Central American countries, Lin Jian concluded, adding that China will continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with these countries, contribute to their socio-economic development, and bring more benefits to the people of these countries. –0–
