BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) — China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) on Sunday extended a yellow alert, the third-most severe in China's four-tier weather warning system, as Typhoon Tapa approaches, becoming the 16th typhoon this year.
The typhoon is forecast to move northwest at a speed of about 20 km/h and is expected to make landfall in southern China's Guangdong Province in the early hours of Sept. 8 or later that morning, the agency said.
Typhoon Tapa is likely to bring strong winds to the northern waters of the South China Sea and some coastal areas of Guangdong Province, the NMC said. At the same time, heavy rains will hit Guangdong Province and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in some places.
In addition, on Sunday, China's Ministry of Water Resources activated a Level 4 flood prevention alert in Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, calling on local authorities to closely monitor the rainfall, flooding and typhoon movement, ensuring safety at reservoirs and construction sites. –0–
