KUNMING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) — The 2025 Global South Media and Think Tank Forum opened Saturday in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province.
The event brought together nearly 500 participants from more than 260 media outlets, think tanks and government agencies from 110 countries and regions, as well as international and regional organizations.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Hu Heping, deputy director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, said the Global Governance Initiative recently put forward by China provides important guidance for the Global South to jointly advance the reform of the global governance system.
Hu Heping expressed optimism that the forum will deepen communications and exchanges between media and think tanks, help countries in the Global South strengthen cooperation amidst the changing world, and jointly build a better future.
Xinhua News Agency Director-General Fu Hua said in his speech that Xinhua, as China's state news agency and a global news agency, is willing to work with all parties to effectively tell stories of how leaders in the Global South are leading efforts and promoting the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.
In a video message to the opening ceremony participants, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Melissa Fleming expressed hope that all parties will work together to promote global sustainable development and intercultural dialogue, restore balance to the information ecosystem, and jointly create a fair and healthy online public space.
The forum, which runs until September 9, is organized by Xinhua News Agency, the CPC Committee and the Yunnan Provincial People's Government. –0–
