BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) — At the invitation of Chinese State Council Premier Li Qiang, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro will pay an official visit to China from Sept. 8 to 10, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Friday.

This will be Luis Montenegro's first visit to China as head of government.

Guo Jiakun made the statement at a regular departmental press briefing, commenting on L. Montenegro's visit to the country at the request of one of the journalists present.

"China and Portugal enjoy traditional friendship," Guo Jiakun stressed, noting that in recent years, under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries, the two sides have firmly adhered to the strategic direction of mutual respect, openness, inclusiveness and common progress, and achieved positive results in exchanges and cooperation in areas such as trade, green development, technology and culture, which have brought tangible benefits to the two peoples.

"This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of China-Portugal comprehensive strategic partnership," the Chinese diplomat noted, saying that China is willing to work with Portugal to deepen strategic mutual trust, strengthen friendly ties, expand mutually beneficial cooperation through high-quality joint construction of the Belt and Road, and promote new progress in bilateral relations.

Guo Jiakun also expressed condolences over the recent cable car derailment in Lisbon, which left many people dead and injured. “We mourn the victims, offer sincere sympathy to the families of the victims, and wish a speedy recovery to all those injured,” a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said. –0–
