KABUL, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — The death toll from a powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake that hit eastern Afghanistan has risen to 1,411 in Kunar province alone, with 3,124 injured, Afghan interim government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Tuesday.

On his page on the social network X, the official wrote that the earthquake primarily affected the city of Asadabad, the administrative center of Kunar province, and the districts of Nurgal, Suki, Vatapur, Chapa Dara and Pech Dara. According to him, 5,412 residential buildings were destroyed in these districts.

More than 8,000 houses were completely or partially destroyed in the powerful earthquake that hit Kunar, Nangarhar, Nuristan, Laghman and Panjshir provinces in eastern Afghanistan, Juma Khan Nayil, spokesman for the Afghanistan Red Crescent Society, told Xinhua.
