SAO PAULO, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has the right to a fair trial for allegedly trying to overthrow the government after losing the 2022 presidential election, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday.

J. Bolsonaro and his aides face up to 43 years in prison if they are found guilty of attempting a coup.

"I hope that justice will prevail with the right to the presumption of innocence, that's all. I wish for myself and for any of my enemies the right to the presumption of innocence," L.I. Lula da Silva said as the final stage of the trial began in the Supreme Federal Court /the country's highest court/.

The President noted that J. Bolsonaro has the right to self-justification, which was denied to L. I. Lula da Silva when he was arrested in 2018 on corruption charges. The case against him was later closed when it turned out that the anti-corruption operation “Car Wash” was politically motivated.

"He /Bolsonaro/ can defend himself, which I could not. I did not complain, I did not cry," the president told reporters in Sao Paulo. –0–
