CAIRO, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) — Egypt's Foreign Ministry on Monday condemned Israel's ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip as a continuous violation of international humanitarian law.
The ministry said in a statement that Israel's "military expansion" runs counter to intensive global mediation efforts, including joint efforts by Egypt and Qatar to end the war through a new ceasefire proposal, and reflects Israel's complete lack of desire to end the war in Gaza, reduce regional tensions and restore calm and peace.
Israel is retreating from the peace process based on the principle of “two states for two peoples” supported by the international community, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said. Israel’s policy of starvation and blockade against the defenseless civilian population of Gaza threatens to multiply the catastrophic humanitarian consequences in the enclave.
On August 8, Israel announced that the country's security cabinet had approved a plan to take control of Gaza City, prompting immediate domestic and international condemnation.
The Israeli military said on Friday it had begun preliminary operations and the first stages of an offensive on Gaza City, and was moving with particular intensity on the outskirts of the city. –0–
