TOKYO, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) — Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Secretary-General Hiroshi Moriyama has announced his intention to resign to take responsibility for the party's crushing defeat in the Upper House election, local media reported.

Hiroshi Moriyama is expected to submit his resignation to Prime Minister and LDP Chairman Shigeru Ishiba, the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper reported.

His resignation is seen as a major blow to the party leadership, with many in the LDP warning that it could undermine the government's ability to function and increase pressure on Shigeru Ishiba himself to determine his own political future.

Shigeru Ishiba said on Tuesday that he will decide whether to step down at an appropriate time.

At the LDP general meeting, Shigeru Ishiba said he had no intention of clinging to his position. “My duty is not to shirk responsibility, but to make the right decisions at the right time,” he said.

He highlighted priorities such as ensuring wage growth outpaces inflation, tariff negotiations and strengthening the economy, as well as reforming agricultural policy, including measures to support rice farming, national broadcaster NHK reported. –0–
