TOKYO, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) — The country is experiencing its hottest summer on record this year, with the average temperature rising 2.36 degrees Celsius above the long-term average, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The reading was the highest since records began in 1898 and significantly exceeded previous records set in 2022 and 2023, which were 1.76 degrees Celsius above average.
Unusually high temperatures were observed from June to August. On August 5, the city of Isesaki in Gunma Prefecture saw the air warm up to 41.8 degrees Celsius, setting a national record.
Temperatures in Japan again exceeded 40 degrees Celsius on August 30 and 31, bringing the total number of abnormally hot days this year to a record nine.
The JMA has called this summer “abnormally hot,” highlighting the serious risks of extreme weather events across the country. –0–
