KABUL, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) — The death toll from a powerful earthquake that hit eastern Afghanistan has risen to 1,124 and 3,251 others have been injured, the Afghan Red Crescent Society said on Tuesday.

More than 8,000 houses, mostly in Kunar province, were completely or partially destroyed in the quake, Juma Khan Nayil, head of the information and publication department of the Afghanistan Red Crescent Society, told Xinhua.

Emergency medical teams and rescue workers are working to extract people trapped under the rubble, and the death toll and injuries have not yet been finalized.

Recall that on August 31 at 11:47 local time, an earthquake occurred in eastern Afghanistan. The epicenter of the tremors was located 27 km northeast of Jalalabad, the source was at a depth of about 8 km. –0–
