KABUL, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — The death toll from the earthquake in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar and Nangarhar provinces has risen to 622, with 1,555 injured, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The death toll in Kunar has reached 610, with 1,300 injured and many homes destroyed. In Nangarhar, 12 people have died, 255 others have been injured and dozens of homes have been damaged, ministry spokesman Abdul Matin Kani said.

He said security, medical, transportation, food and support services have stepped up their efforts to provide comprehensive and immediate assistance to those affected by the disaster.

According to the US Geological Survey, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan at 11:47 a.m. local time on August 31. The epicenter of the tremors was located 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, with the source located at a depth of about 8 kilometers. –0–
