The 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit is being held in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1. "This will be the fifth SCO summit in China and the largest such event since the organization's founding," Liu Bin, assistant foreign minister, said at a briefing for Chinese and foreign media on August 22.
Li Yongquan, a research fellow at the Institute of Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that the scale of the Tianjin Summit is larger than all previous ones, which fully demonstrates the support for China's work as the chair country from all sides and reflects the growing influence and attractiveness of the SCO in the international arena.
In the 24 years since its establishment, under the guidance of the “Shanghai Spirit” based on “mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for the diversity of civilizations and the pursuit of common development,” the SCO has grown from the six founding members into a “greater SCO family” covering 26 countries on three continents – Asia, Europe and Africa – and has become the world’s largest regional organization in terms of geographic coverage and population.
