KABUL, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — An earthquake struck Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province on Sunday night local time, killing at least 250 people and injuring 500 others, state-run Bakhtar News Agency reported Monday.

According to media reports, the provincial disaster management agency confirmed that there were casualties and injuries.

Officials said the death toll was preliminary as rescue teams reached remote areas with limited communications, official media reported, adding that efforts were ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to affected communities.

Afghanistan's National Radio and Television earlier reported nine dead and 20 wounded in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Afghanistan on August 31 at 11:47 a.m. local time, according to the US Geological Survey's Earthquake Information Network.

The earthquake's epicenter was 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar Province in eastern Afghanistan, and its source was at a depth of 8 kilometers.

Strong tremors were felt in the capital Kabul, and internet access was disrupted in some parts of Afghanistan. –0–
