KABUL, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — The death toll from an earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has risen to 500 people, with more than 1,000 injured, state-run Radio Television of Afghanistan (RTA) reported on Monday.

Rescue teams are moving through remote areas with limited communications to assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance, with officials saying the casualty figure is preliminary as the operation continues, RTA added.

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan at 11:47 a.m. local time on August 31, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter of the tremors was located 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, with the source located at a depth of about 8 kilometers. –0–
