UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday expressed regret over the declaration of the UN Resident Coordinator as persona non grata by the interim authorities of Burkina Faso, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

The Secretary-General learned with regret that on 18 August the transitional authorities of Burkina Faso declared the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in the country, Carol Flor-Smiereczniak, persona non grata.

A. Guterres expressed full confidence in the professionalism and dedication of K. Flor-Smerecniak, as well as in the work of the UN system in Burkina Faso as a whole. The UN system, led by the Resident Coordinator, is working closely with the transitional authorities of the African country to support development efforts and humanitarian assistance, noted S. Dujarric.

The doctrine of persona non grata does not apply to UN officials. Only the Secretary General has the right, after a thorough investigation, to decide to recall any UN official, stressed S. Dujarric.

According to him, A. Guterres reaffirms the UN's commitment to continuing to support the people of Burkina Faso in full cooperation with the transitional authorities.

K. Flor-Smerecznyak has left Burkina Faso, S. Dujarric told journalists. –0– Oleg
