UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — The United Nations Security Council on Thursday extended the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for the last time before its withdrawal.
Resolution 2790, which was unanimously adopted by the 15-member Security Council, extends UNIFIL's mandate until 31 December 2026, with a subsequent drawdown and withdrawal of personnel within a year.
The resolution requires UNIFIL to cease operations on 31 December 2026 and to begin an orderly and safe drawdown and withdrawal of personnel from that date within one year.
As stated in the resolution, the liquidation of UNIFIL shall commence after the drawdown and withdrawal phase has been completed. The resolution authorizes the maintenance of a limited contingent of guards during the liquidation of UNIFIL to protect UNIFIL personnel, installations and assets in close coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces and Security Forces. –0–
