BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — The upcoming summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will give new and powerful impetus to the development of the organization through practical actions, said Sun Zhuangzhi, director of the Institute of Russia, East Europe and Central Asia at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

The next SCO summit will be held in Tianjin, Northern China, from August 31 to September 1.

“Both conceptually and practically, the SCO represents a new direction of regional and international cooperation that is characterized by equality of all member states regardless of their size, opposition to the Cold War mentality and hegemonism, a combination of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and full consideration of the realities in the region when determining the goals and objectives of cooperation,” Sun Zhuangzhi noted.

“The Shanghai Spirit, characterized by mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, mutual consultation, respect for cultural diversity, and the desire for joint development, is an important contribution of the SCO to the formation of a new type of international relations,” he added.

According to him, in the constantly evolving and changing international environment, the importance of the "Shanghai Spirit" is further emphasized. It is necessary to continue to develop and enrich it with new content that suits the times.

"The initiative of building a community with a shared future for the SCO put forward by China aims to strengthen the ties among the SCO member states through cooperation. At the same time, through mutually beneficial cooperation among countries, the "Shanghai Spirit" can be more vividly realized and common development realized," Sun Zhuangzhi said.

As the rotating chair of the SCO in 2024-2025, China held more than 100 events covering a wide range of cooperation areas, with 2025 declared the “SCO Year of Sustainable Development”.

"Great attention is paid to practical cooperation within the SCO. Since its founding, the SCO has achieved fruitful results in cooperation in the fields of politics, economics, security and humanitarian spheres, which has made a significant contribution to promoting the overall development of Central Asia, which has been confirmed by the SCO core, and ensuring peace and stability in this region," Sun Zhuangzhi stated.

"All SCO countries face urgent tasks of promoting economic growth and modernization. Holding the "SCO Year of Sustainable Development" helps to improve the quality and level of the economy of these countries and promote cooperation between them at a higher level, and is also consistent with the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development until 2030," the expert added.

In his opinion, cooperation within the SCO in a number of priority areas, including poverty reduction, green development, digital economy and connectivity, has broad prospects.

At the Tianjin Summit, the leaders of the SCO member states will make statements on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN.

“On this occasion, SCO member states will jointly promote the correct view of history, defend the results of the Victory in World War II, and support the international system with the UN at its core,” Sun Zhuangzhi said.

“The SCO actively and loudly spreads its voice on major international and regional issues, protecting the interests of the countries of the Global South, and thereby makes efforts to promote the reform of global governance, including the reform of some key institutions in this area, in order to promote the development of the international order in a more just and rational direction,” he added.

Sun Zhuangzhi believes that in the current international environment of change and chaos, the SCO should strengthen its capacity in regional and global governance and bring together developing countries and countries in the Global South to better implement the goals and principles of the UN.

The upcoming summit, which will bring together more than 20 foreign leaders and 10 senior officials from international organizations, will be the largest since the establishment of the SCO, which, according to Sun Zhuangzhi, is clear evidence of the organization's openness.

“In today’s world, the SCO, which is not only an organization for regional cooperation but also an important platform for international cooperation and global governance, is gaining increasing appeal and influence thanks to the ‘Shanghai Spirit’,” he explained.

“The SCO remains open to all countries interested in its principles and cooperation within the organization, the model of which differs from traditional regional cooperation and is therefore particularly attractive to countries in the Global South,” Sun Zhuangzhi said.

“During the summit in Tianjin, a number of final documents will be adopted to strengthen cooperation in the areas of security, economics and humanitarian ties, which will indicate the direction of the future development of the SCO,” the expert noted.

“I am confident that the new measures and practical actions aimed at supporting the high-quality development of the SCO and comprehensive cooperation that will be announced at the summit will give a new powerful impetus to cooperation within the organization and will bring more real and tangible benefits to the countries concerned and help them achieve better development by participating in the work of the organization,” he concluded. -0-
