THE HAGUE, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — The Netherlands and Sweden have called on other EU member states to increase pressure on Israel, citing the "unbearable" humanitarian crisis in Gaza and settlement expansion in the West Bank.

In a letter to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas on August 27, Dutch Foreign Minister Ruben Brekelmans and his Swedish counterpart Maria Malmer Stenergaard said “more must be done to increase pressure on the Israeli government to change course and comply with its obligations under international law.”

The ministers proposed sanctions against aggressive settlers in the West Bank and “extremist Israeli ministers” who “encourage illegal settlement activity and actively work against the agreed two-state solution.”

"The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains extremely alarming and unbearable. The suffering of the civilian population is beyond description," the letter says. It is necessary to allow the distribution of aid throughout the Strip, the foreign ministers emphasized.

The ministers also warned that Israel's recent decision to expand its military offensive in Gaza could lead to "large-scale displacement of civilians into ever smaller enclaves." -0-
