BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) — The role of the United Nations should be strengthened, but the organization also needs reform, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu said on Friday.
"The serious crises of recent years have repeatedly reminded us that the role of the UN must be strengthened, not weakened. Its status must be preserved, not replaced," the deputy minister said at a press conference in Beijing.
According to him, the effectiveness of the UN depends on the observance by member states of the UN Charter and compliance with international law and the basic norms of international relations.
“At the same time, the UN needs reform and improvement to better respond to global challenges, and this especially concerns increasing the representation and voice of developing countries in international affairs,” Ma Zhaoxu emphasized. -0-
