NEW DELHI, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — At least 17 people were killed and several others injured when part of a four-storey building collapsed in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, officials said on Thursday.
The building collapsed early on Wednesday in Virar East area of Palghar district, about 86 km north of Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra state.
The death toll so far stands at 17, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said. "Nine people have been rescued," he added.
The building, which contained about 50 apartments, collapsed onto a nearby vacant apartment building, officials said.
Police, firefighters, emergency services and disaster response teams immediately arrived at the scene. –0–
