HANOI, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — The death toll from Typhoon Kajiki and the floods it caused in Vietnam has risen to seven, with one person still missing and 34 injured, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported on Wednesday.
According to the country's Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the disaster destroyed 15 houses and damaged more than 8,700 buildings, including 63 schools and eight medical facilities. More than 81,500 hectares of rice fields were flooded, and about 2,000 heads of livestock and poultry died.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Trinh has ordered local authorities to urgently restore electricity, telecommunications, transport, schools and health services, as well as deliver humanitarian aid and repair damaged homes to stabilize the situation in affected communities ahead of the new school year.
Typhoon Kajiki, Vietnam's fifth storm this year, made landfall earlier this week, battering several provinces in the northern and central parts of the country with heavy rains and strong winds. –0–
