Decommissioned fishing boats have been transformed into unique guesthouses, and deserted beaches have become eco-friendly tourist areas. In Rizhao City in Shandong Province, the marine cultural tourism industry is gradually gaining new life: such diverse elements of the tourism business as fishing ports, tea plantations and forests have come together to become a new engine for the development of this seaside city.
In the Shanhaitian resort area of Rizhao City, there is a park dedicated to the marine theme. More than 50 wooden fishing boats have been taken ashore and converted into guest houses in the style of shipyards. The battered fishing gear, combined with modern design, breathes new life into the old vessels.
The sea is a strategic area for high-quality development. In 2024, China's marine economy exceeded 10 trillion yuan for the first time. At the sixth meeting of the Central Financial and Economic Affairs Commission (CFEC) held in July this year, it was decided to establish marine cultural and tourism centers, which marked a new direction for the high-quality development of the marine cultural and tourism industry.
Thanks to the development of marine tourism, Rizhao has gained new life. According to statistics, from January to June this year, 22 key tourist sites under monitoring received more than 19.8 million tourists, up 17% compared with the same period last year.
