BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — Calling for China to join nuclear disarmament talks with the United States and Russia is irrational and unrealistic, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Wednesday.
Guo Jiakun made the statement at a regular departmental press conference, answering a question regarding a report about US President Donald Trump's recent statement that the US and Russia are discussing reducing their nuclear arsenals, and that the American leader hopes for China's participation in this process.
The country with the world's largest nuclear arsenal should earnestly fulfill its special and major obligations on nuclear disarmament, continue to make radical and substantial reductions in its nuclear arsenal, and create conditions for the final realization of complete and comprehensive nuclear disarmament, the Chinese diplomat said.
"China's nuclear capabilities are not at the same level as the United States, and the two countries' nuclear policies and strategic security environments are completely different," Guo Jiakun said.
Noting that China adheres to a no-first-use policy and a nuclear strategy aimed at self-defense, the diplomat said China always keeps its nuclear forces at the minimum level necessary for national security and never engages in an arms race with anyone.
China's nuclear power and nuclear policy are an important contribution to world peace, Guo Jiakun added. -0-
