TEHRAN, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) — Iran is fully aware of the negative consequences of a possible reimposition of UN sanctions under the snapback mechanism and is working to prevent such an outcome, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said on Tuesday.

He rejected claims that Tehran was downplaying the issue, adding that the country was concerned about the possible consequences.

The diplomat said Iran had made “significant efforts” to prevent such a move, pointing to ongoing talks with the EU3 (France, Britain and Germany, the European parties to the 2015 nuclear deal) in Geneva and consultations with other members of the UN Security Council.

Discussions are focused on lifting sanctions and the future of Resolution 2231, which underpins the nuclear deal, Baghaei said. Tehran will continue to be transparent about the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, he said.

The diplomat also stressed that the “European troika” has neither the legal nor the moral authority to launch the snapback mechanism.

Representatives of France, Britain and Germany recently warned of the possible activation of the snapback mechanism, which implies the restoration of all UN Security Council sanctions against Tehran in the event of no progress in negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program. –0–
