WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he was considering imposing "very serious" economic sanctions on Russia if it abandons a ceasefire in its three-and-a-half-year conflict with Ukraine.
“What I have in mind is very, very serious if I have to do it, but I want it [the war] to end,” the media quotes D. Trump as saying in response to a reporter’s question about whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will face consequences if he does not agree to a ceasefire.
"We have economic sanctions. I say economic sanctions because we are not going to get involved in a world war," he added.
D. Trump has long been threatening sanctions against Russia and trying to mediate a one-on-one meeting between V. Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, for which, according to the Kremlin, the conditions are not yet ready.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday that the deployment of foreign troops on Ukrainian territory was unacceptable to Russia, while the United States and Europe were working to provide security guarantees to Kyiv.
S. Lavrov also noted on August 19 that Russia does not reject any formats, either bilateral or trilateral, for resolving the conflict in Ukraine. –0–
