Astana, Aug. 26 /Xinhua/ — The Karkyra-Avtodorozhny checkpoint on the border of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan has been operating around the clock since August 25, Kazinform reported on Tuesday, citing the Border Service of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan.
According to the agency, the decision was the result of bilateral agreements reached by the heads of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan during the official visit of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Kyrgyzstan.
The Karkyra-Avtodorozhny checkpoint, located in the Tyup district of the Issyk-Kul region, is multi-directional and is designed to allow the passage of people and vehicles. Previously, it only worked during daylight hours.
According to Kazinform, in 2026, construction of modern border infrastructure facilities is planned on the territory of the checkpoint, which will significantly increase its throughput capacity and control efficiency.
In October 2024, the Zhogorku Kenesh (parliament) of Kyrgyzstan supported the transition of the checkpoint to a 24-hour operation mode. Later, the President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov ratified the corresponding agreement. –0–
