BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) — Beijing was put on a Level 3 flood alert at noon on Tuesday after city authorities earlier warned of heavy rainfall expected overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday.
Some parts of the city could see more than 70mm of rainfall in six hours or more than 100mm in 24 hours, the Beijing Meteorological Station said.
An orange alert has been issued for heavy rainfall in seven areas of the city, while a red alert has been issued for the suburban areas of Mentougou and Fangshan, where heavy rains could trigger flash floods.
The city's water supply and meteorology departments jointly issued yellow warnings for flooding and torrents, saying city areas would be at risk of flooding from 11 p.m. Tuesday, while Fangshan, Mentougou, Changping and Yanqing districts were at high risk of torrents.
The Flood Authority has urged the public to limit movement, stay away from riverbeds and dangerous mountainous areas, and avoid parking in low-lying areas or under bridges.
Let us recall that China has a four-tier weather warning system, with red representing the highest level of danger, followed by orange, yellow and blue. -0-
