August 15 marks the 80th anniversary of Japan's unconditional surrender, as well as the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Museum of Evidence of Unit 731, the Japanese special forces unit that carried out horrific biological warfare experiments during World War II. On this day, the museum unveiled a series of new evidence and historical materials, including 3,010 pages of archival documents, 194 minutes of video footage, 312 photographs, 12 postcards, and eight letters, that detail Japan's crimes in the field of biological warfare.
The released evidence is mainly divided into three main categories. The first part is historical materials obtained from official Japanese institutions. The second part is oral testimonies from former Unit 731 members collected by the museum in 2018 during an evidence-gathering trip to Japan. The third part is historical materials about the crimes obtained from the Japanese public.
New evidence of crimes and historical materials that were published this time further reveal the system of crimes of Japanese bacteriological warfare and once again prove that it was a deliberate and organized state crime committed on orders from above.
