WASHINGTON, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order providing "additional concrete measures" to "further toughen the fight against crime" in Washington and signaling the possibility of deploying the National Guard across the country.
According to the document, the defense secretary must create “a specialized unit of the District of Columbia National Guard” prepared to ensure public safety and order in the capital if necessary, and also “ensure that state National Guards are similarly trained and prepared to assist in suppressing civil unrest throughout the country.”
In addition, the Pentagon chief is required to ensure that the National Guard's rapid response forces are ready to "rapidly deploy nationwide" if needed.
The order also directs the National Park Service to hire additional Park Police officers to support public safety in Washington, and directs the District of Columbia Attorney's Office to "hire additional prosecutors" to handle violent and property crimes.
CNN called the order the “clearest sign yet” that Trump intends to expand the use of the military in law enforcement nationwide. The report noted that the National Guard is largely under the command of governors, and the order does not specify which authorities would control units outside Washington if a state governor does not want to use them.
The order came days after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered National Guard troops patrolling the streets of Washington to begin carrying their service weapons.
Trump previously said the federal government could extend such anti-crime measures to Chicago, and he later expressed a desire to deploy the National Guard in New York. On August 11, he called those two cities, as well as Baltimore, Los Angeles and Oakland, “problematic.” The mayors of all five cities are Democrats. –0–
